Oxygen Therapy in St. John’s

Many people suffer from a variety of heart, lung and other respiratory illnesses that can be assisted by supplemental oxygen. In fact, about 4% of the Canadian adult population can benefit from oxygen therapy for respiratory care. Why? Oxygen makes up 21% of the air we breathe, but during times of illness, our bodies often require oxygen levels greater than 21%. In these cases, a physician will often prescribe oxygen, a non-addictive drug which can be safely administered in the home.

Oxygen Concentrators

An oxygen concentrator runs on electric power. An on-board compressor draws in room air (21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen, 1% other gases) and pumps it into one of two sets of molecular sieves. Through this process, nitrogen is absorbed from room air and high purity oxygen becomes available on demand, set at a flow rate as per your doctor's prescription.

CAIRE® Companion 5™

CAIRE® Companion 5™

This compact stationary oxygen concentrator is one of the most technologically advanced concentrators available on the market. The quiet operation, simple user interface, and reduced power draw are perfect for patients and care facilities, while the durability, reliability, and ease of maintenance are the perfect combination for equipment providers.

  • Less than 300 W power consumption at 3 LPM and lower continuous flow rates, reducing electrical costs.

  • Low noise output.

  • Robust metal cannula barb for durability.

  • Humidifier bottle easily accessible on the front of the unit.

  • Easy-to-read flow meter and alarm lights.

  • Available with oxygen monitor alarm for purity below 85%.

CAIRE® NewLife Elite 5™

The AirSep NewLife Elite concentrator delivers up to 5 LPM of oxygen. The robust construction, ease-of-use, and low maintenance make it the perfect choice for facilities, hospitals, clinical settings and harsh environmental conditions. Units are available with an optional O2 monitor. The AirSep NewLife Elite can also be equipped with a pediatric flowmeter for use with infants and other patients prescribed for low-litre flow (0.125–2 LPM). The Air Outlet option enables the unit to deliver medicated nebulizer treatments while simultaneously providing supplemental oxygen.

CAIRE® NewLife Intensity 10
CAIRE® NewLife Elite 5™

CAIRE® NewLife Intensity 10

The NewLife Intensity is the most durable and capable high-, continuous-flow stationary oxygen concentrator. This stationary oxygen concentrator combines high pressure – 20 psi outlet pressure – with high flow to create up to 10 LPM of therapeutic oxygen making it ideal for long-term care facilities where higher oxygen flow is necessary. NewLife Intensity 10 LPM dual flow units provide additional savings to long-term care facilities with their capability to deliver oxygen to two patients simultaneously from a single concentrator.

Back-up Cylinder Oxygen

Since oxygen concentrators run on electric power, most customers have an emergency back-up supply of oxygen in case of a power failure, black out or emergency situation. Several different cylinders are available ('E', 'M', or 'K'), however, 'E' is our recommendation as it is lightweight, priced right and can substitute as a portable system, providing additional value. The chart below demonstrates size, capacity and average hours of use with a Continuous Flow Regulator (CFR).

Portable Cylinder Oxygen

When you want to go out and about, for shopping, family visits or simply to enjoy an active lifestyle, portable cylinders provide freedom and easy portability. Coupled with an Oxygen Conserving Device (OCD) Regulator, this portable system can last for hours. The OCD attaches to the cylinder top and then both are placed in the shoulder bag for convenient carrying. This system is very lightweight and oxygen dependable. Please see the chart below for available cylinder sizes, flow rate and average durations.
